Born in Tokyo on Feb. 7, 1955. In his early days Katayama saw Disney and other American TV animation, and found how great the animation is. Then encountering the works by Osamu Tezuka gave him a lot of influence in his life.
From around 20 years old, Katayama started put his cartoons and illustration on newspapers and magazines. He joined the Japan Cartoonists Association from 1978 to 1990. He is known for his varied activity in cartoon field. He has produced many events and exhibitions. He also directed the documentary film about Tezuka's animation.
He is well known in animation field, too. He worked as a festival coordinator for the Second Hiroshima International Animation Festival which was held in 1987. He has helped ANIDO for a long time.
He is famous not only as an illustrator but also a good M. C. He will publish more than 100 portraits of animators from all over the world in the book "Animated People".
